WELCOME CARD

Sunday September 14th

WORKING/CLEANING BEE - Saturday September 20th

Start at 8:00am with lunch at around 1:00pm.

Come when you can and stay as long as you can.

Jobs will include cleaning cobwebs and windows, general gardening, cleaning up the store room and putting together a new street library for the front of our building.

This is our opportunity to ensure the facilities are fit for gospel ministry and to show our neighbours and visitors that we are thankful to God for this property we have been given.

Speak to Trav Waterhouse for details.

PRAYER MEETING - Sunday September 21st

What a privilege that we can speak to our Creator in prayer! Let’s gather together as God’s people to pray for our church, our community and for one another. We will meet in the Care Room. See Brendan Elliott or visit www.darebinpc.com.au/prayer for more details.

WE ARE HOSTING THE NEXT PYV BIG DAY OUT  - Saturday October 11th, 10:00am - 3:30pm

Our church is hosting the next Big Day Out for Presbyterian Youth Victoria (PYV) - a day for youth across our state to get together and learn about Mission: Taking the Gospel to People. DPC youth from year 7-12 are invited to join, with registrations now open: https://www.pyv.org.au/darebin-bdo-2025/

We would love a few helpers from our church to assist the PYV team to serve the youth! If you could be available, particularly to help with the BBQ lunch, we'd love to hear from you! Contact Aleesha.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY DURING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS (Sep 21st, Sep 28th & Oct 5th)

To give our wonderful children’s ministry volunteers a break over the school holidays we will be pausing our programs. It's also so good to have all ages in our church family all in together to worship God and learn from his word!

  • School-aged children - There will be activity packs for children of all ages (from creche to ELOS), and all ages are welcome to remain in the service. Parents are responsible for supervising their children. Please do feel free to use the care room as well if that's helpful.

  • Preschool-aged children - We will still have volunteers so that creche and DPKinder kids can head to creche for some supervised fun if that would work better for them!

UPCOMING SERMONS

  • September 14th - Special sermon on eldership

  • September 21st - Another special sermon on eldership

  • September 28th - Psalm 17

TITUS 1:1-9

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and which now at his appointed season he has brought to lightthrough the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,

To Titus, my true son in our common faith:

Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint[a]elders in every town, as I directed you. An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe[b] and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseermanages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.

Sermon Outline

Titus 1:5-9

Why Elders?

God calls churches to appoint elders who are men of godly, tested character

  1. When is a church finished being planted?

  2. God’s plan for local leadership that blesses the church (Titus 1:5-9; Also Acts 20:28 & 1 Timothy 3:1-2)

    • Elders who are men (1 Timothy 2:11-14)

    • Elders who are overseers

      • “Elder” (presbuteros) and “overseer” (episkopos) refer to the same office

      • Leading and protecting the church

    • Elders who are a team

  3. God’s qualifications for elders (Titus 1)

    • Gospel-shaped character (6-8)

      • Blameless in the home

      • Blameless in community

    • Gospel-centred convictions (9)

    • Gospel-empowered competencies (7, 9)

  4. Pray for God to further his work at DPC by raising up additional elders of godly character
